Man Utd vs Malaysia XI - E-Marketing Basics
Yes I am a great football fan. No I don’t support Man Utd. But after watching tonight’s game i think there are number of lessons to be learnt. There I was in the sweltering heat explaining to my 12 year old son how he could learn so many things from watching the “pros”.
What I ended up showing him was that the “pros” despite all their training and coaching still don’t apply the basics that they have learned since childhood. What do I mean?
Fistly let me say that the MU boys were taking it easy and trying some slick moves to impress the crowd so I will give them the benefit of the doubt. However, the same cannot be said of the Malaysian XI who were playing in the game of their dreams. So it was quite puzzling for me to be highlighting schoolboy errors like:
- giving the ball away to the opponent when it would better to clear the ball for a throw in;
- meet the ball instead of waiting for it to come to you;
- marking a player when defending instead of standing on your own;
- play the way your facing instead of tring to turn your marker;
- using the full width of the pitch instead of crowding;
…… and the list goes on…….
Now that I have given you my 5 cents worth as an armchair football coach, let me tell what this has to do with e-marketing.
DISCIPLINE. In a word that is the essential ingredient of success. In football that was the the difference between the reigning world champions and our young warriors. And in buiding a successful e-marketing campaign it is the same.
Creating successful campaigns for the web is not easy; certainly not as easy as we would like to think. And to create results consistently requires discipline and perseverance. There is no shortage of how-to guides on the net for your next adwords campaign or email campaign. BUT what is the difference between success and failure is the determination and adherance to the simple basic rules time after time.
To be a really excellent e-marketer follow the basics and het those right and then you set yourself up for success.
